The Australian Museum is the oldest museum in Australia, having been established in 1827, almost two centuries ago. It is located in Hyde Park, and has resided in the same building since 1849. This museum is renowned for its incredibly diverse anthropological collection, as well as the successful and innovative research it has provided in the field. The museum regularly features temporary exhibitions and currently features “Spiders - Alive and Deadly”. The museum also hosts a variety of child focused activities which aim to involve children in science and history from a young age. The museum is open from 9.30am-5pm daily, and has a general admission fee of $15, whilst children are free. The Australian National Maritime Museum is primarily located on the shores of Darling Harbour, with a collection of retired vessels also open for public viewing, including a submarine, and tall ships, as well as a handful of other ships that operate on a rotational basis. The museum features a broad variety of permanent exhibitions focusing upon Australia’s vast naval and seafaring history. The museum also hosts a myriad of temporary exhibitions, often with an international focus, such as the current “Escape from Pompeii” collection. The museum is open from 9.30am-5pm daily. Tickets to the permanent collections are free, however the temporary exhibitions can be accessed with an all encompassing ticket costing $32 for adults, $20 for children, and $79 for a family. The Art Gallery of New South Wales is the premium art location within Sydney, boasting a collection that spans centuries of art sourced from a multitude of artists and countries, across numerous forms. Its collection also contains an immense display of Australian artwork. Despite the gallery’s worth being estimated at approximately AU$1 billion, entry to the gallery is free, with most of the collection being substantiated by government funding and private donations, many of which range into the tens of millions of dollars, however, some major temporary exhibits do require paid tickets. The museum regularly runs tours of the gallery, as well as its specific collections. These are free of charge and often run by volunteers who maintain a passion in their respective subjects. The Museum of Contemporary Art is located in the heart of Sydney, nestled below the Harbour Bridge and opposite the Opera House. The museum features a large permanent collection of Aboriginal Art, as well as numerous temporary exhibitions, many of which are free to access. The Museum’s current feature exhibition is entitled “The National - New Australian Art”, and features a variety of contemporary art by Australian artists, with a heavy emphasis upon the modern interpretations of traditional Aboriginal art. The museum also contains a café on its upper level, featuring beautiful views across Sydney Harbour, as well as excellent seasonal menus that contain a variety of local sourced ingredients. The Powerhouse Museum is located in Ultimo, and is the primary location for the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences. The museum features 400 000 permanent items, most of which are constantly on public display, as well as numerous temporary exhibitions, often featuring items sourced internationally. The museum is currently playing host to an exhibit launched in collaboration with the British Museum, entitled “Egyptian Mummies: Exploring Ancient Lives”. The exhibition features six ancient Egyptian mummies, seminars from field experts and a kids specific exhibit that has a mock archaeological dig. The museum is open daily from 10am-5pm, with entry costing $15 for adults and free for children under.
